Just In Time For Easter…

We skipped the eggs and went straight for the chickens! The babies are here and staying warm in a little set-up we created in the laundry room. They’ll have to stay inside for another few weeks until they get more of their big-girl feathers… but we’re not quite sure if the space will be big enough for them soon, they’re growing so fast. There are a couple different kinds of breeds including Rhode Island Reds, a Sex Link, and Ameraucanas. It’s so funny to see their different personalities already- the Reds seem to be the most bold (and eager to escape), while the Ameraucanas are much more skittish. A pretty cool sidenote- the Ameraucanas lay blue eggs! No dye necessary, thank you.

I used to raise laying hens. I had Rhode Island Reds, Golden Comets and New Hampshire. I always wanted to raise Ameraucanas but I never got around to ordering any before I went away to college. We would let them free-range in the summer, the advantage of being on the farm. They were so beautiful.
Chickens can be quite tame if you keep up with the continuous contact. I made a pet out of one of my hens because I held her so much.

Those little girls are so cool! Been researching how to have some chickens in my backyard too. You’ve convinced me that raising them from “scratch” is the way to go. But tell the truth, how much work are they? If you’ve got any good resources, would love to see them.

Ameraucanas also lay green and red eggs. 🙂 And they are larger eggs than the average chicken.

My grandmother had lots of Rhode Island Reds as I was growing up. I sure miss them.

Wow, thanks so much for all the great feedback guys! To answer some of your questions, we are currently keeping them in a big metal washbin with sawdust on the bottom and chicken wire over the top. We have a heat lamp hanging overhead that will be raised little by little as they grow.
The coop that’s being built is about 6’x8′ of space enclosed with chicken wire, with an additional roosting box attached to it. It’s reccommended that each chicken has about 10 sf of roaming space, so the size is based on that.
As for what’s legal in Oakland, I found this nifty site (http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/chickenlaws.html)
which states that in our city chickens are allowed as long as they’re enclosed and 20 ft away from any dwelling.
Talking with other chicken owners, I’ve been told to take extra precautionary steps to avoid RATS, which are pretty much guaranteed if you have chickens. Also, we have to consider having the chickens’ wings clipped as they will be able to fly enough to get over fences (assuming we let them out once in a while).

Aw, I love chicks! I used to work as a cashier in a ranch store where we sold chicks and ducklings every spring. One night the power went out and I was worried about the remaining babies being cold without their heat lamps on, so I was behind the front counter checking shoppers out with a whole flock of baby birds tucked down the front of my hoodie. ;D

Sooo cute! We raised a mix of chicks, too, and the Rhode Island Reds were also the boldest as chicks, and are the most aggressive as adults. One took a chunk out of my finger! 😦

What a fantastic way to celebrate Easter! The chicks are adorable. Seeing their photos makes me want to add a few to our small flock. We just got our first batch of chicks last fall and can’t believe how much we love having chickens here on our farm. In fact, I just published a post all about how excited we are to be celebrating our first Easter with fresh eggs! Enjoy the chicks and have a Happy Easter.
