Weekend To-Do List

April 7, 2011

Normally it costs about $25 to visit the de Young Museum, but on Friday nights until May 6th you can see Olmec: Colossal Masterworks of Ancient Mexico for free on Olmec Community Friday Nights. Olmec features over 100 objects, like colossal heads and an epic throne, drawn primarily from Mexican national collections. This event is happening in conjuction with ‘Friday Nights at the de Young’ with live music, poetry, films, dance, art activities and lectures in the public spaces of the museum.

Saturday is  Obscura Day in cities nationwide, celebrating urban oddities and hidden treasures not normally accessible to the public. Like, where the hell is San Francisco’s Mount Olympus? And Sutro mummies? I’m down.

If you’re in Oakland, Join Atlas Obscura and Hendricks Gin at the home of the Kinetic Steam Works for an afternoon demonstration and discussion of their beautiful, steam-powered machines. Kinetic Steam Works is a Bay Area collective dedicated to steam powered machines. They will be firing up their Victorian-era contraptions and talking about what makes steam power work, followed by a cocktail mixer with complimentary cocktails provided by Hendrick’s Gin. Register for their small run of free tickets here.
