Currently Obsessed With: Lyndi Sales

April 3, 2009

Hit up the galleries at 49 Geary last night and fell HARD for the amazing hand-lasered work of one miss lovely Lyndi Sales:

I’m not even going to bother trying to post pictures much, since even the best ones don’t do justice to how awe-inspiring her work is- especially the large scale projects which must have taken FOREVER. Boarding passes, airplane brochures, and even a lifejacket (one of our faves) become mediums for the fragile, intricate work featured in her show, In Transit.

On November 28, 1987, the SAA Helderberg crashed into the Indian Ocean, killing all 159 people aboard. One of the passengers was Lyndi Sales’ father — an event that occurred when she was just fourteen years old. Much of the artwork created by Sales as an adult artist has centered around the process of coming to terms with her father’s death and investigating the fragility of life and the transience of human existence.

You really have to see it to believe it. Her show will be open at the Toomey Tourell Fine Art Gallery, located on the 4th floor of 49 Geary, until April 30th. I highly recommend checking out their site to see amazing close-ups of Sales’ work. If you like what you see, be sure to check out the rest of her spectacular portfolio, which includes beautifully lit dioramas and shadow boxes, at her website. I want I want I want.
