AIA East Bay Design Awards

March 11, 2009

‘Scuse me while I nerd out for a moment- last night was the annual Design Awards for the East Bay’s AIA Chapter (American Institute of Architects) and some amazing work was presented! But the night’s big winner? Oakland’s very own Cathedral of Christ the Light… check out this local bad boy:

Completed in 2008 by a firm that never fails to impress, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, this new iconic landmark houses more than 600,000 parishioners as well as the seat for the local bishop. The design was primarily driven by the extensive use of light and its spiritual significance, and its shape takes the form of the Vesica Piscis. Structurally, the building uses organic and sustainable materials, and is seismically stable enough to last centuries.

I’ve always wondered what this crazy thing on the water was, and now I know! Looks like I’ll be making a nerdy little field trip soon- because how often does one get to experience a space like this? You can find more beautiful pictures and information at SOM’s Project Page– definitely check it out…
