First Friday & Weekend Events

March 6, 2009

just a reminder to everyone that today is the first Friday of the month again, and that means another installment of Art Murmur! This has really become one of favorite East Bay happenings, so if you haven’t gone yet then you definitely need to check out the scene- free art shows, good looking hipster crowd, cheap booze, and usually some cool music thrown in for good measure.

I’m particularly excited for tonight, though, because in addition to Art Murmur I’ll be checking out the work of over 60 local Amoeba Records employees at their 3rd annual art show, thrown in their own Warhol-inspired Factory style. With Velvet Underground cover bands in the background and wine in hand, we’ll be wandering around watching live silk screening, painting and filming. Also, I’m stoked that they’re featuring the screen tests that were recently shown in SF, which I thought I wouldn’t have another chance to see. I think Warhol would certainly be proud- whether that’s a good thing or not is hard to say though! For more details, click here:

Then, this weekend: I’ll be glad that I’ve been thrifty as of late because some excellent perusing opportunities have arisen! If you’re a fan of scavenging like I am, and haven’t been to the White Elephant Sale- where have you been?? I made out like a bandit last year, and hope to have similar luck. Totally got my money’s worth with that fondue set! Come support the Oakland Museum, and feel good about living green via the easiest way possible: re-use! More info here:

On Sunday, head over to The Independent in SF to check out the fantastic Indie-Mart. From 11 to 5, you can support the local DIY scene by buying the wares of over 40 vendors, accompanied by some awesome live music, and beverages. The event is free, but donations go toward SFWAR, San Francisco Women Against Rape. Considering yesterday’s post, this is a cause I can definitely back.

So throw out that old baggage and reward yourself for the much-needed Spring Cleaning, ‘cuz now you have room for way cooler stuff. And that, also, is a cause I can certainly back…
