Music is My Boyfriend

February 10, 2009

You know the saying: All you need is love. And, baby, I got it- a love for art, and a love for music. And if you’re like me, then you’re in luck. This Valentine’s Day, you can treat someone special, or hell- just treat yourself, to a healthy helping of both.

To give or to get:
the Sweethearts Compilation, featuring covers of love songs by some awesome indie bands. Yes, it is through Starbucks. My suggestion? Download it illegally, burn a copy, and say you made it yourself by scouring the web for rare covers- good to go. After listening to it several times though, I gotta say that a few kinda miss the mark (namely Jem covering Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ and Rogue Wave covering YYY’s ‘Maps’- those songs are too good in their original form) but overall I’m pretty impressed and it makes for some easy listening. Definitely check it out.

To do or to don’t:
“Warhol Live” is opening this Saturday at the fantastic De Young Museum:

Warhol Live, at the de Young from February 14 to May 17, 2009, presents the first comprehensive exploration of Andy Warhol’s work as seen through the lens of music. This exhibition brings together a wide variety of works depicting pop music royalty, including Elvis Presley, the Velvet Underground, Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones, Liza Minnelli, Grace Jones, Deborah Harry of Blondie, and Michael Jackson. Major Warhol silkscreen paintings, films and sound recordings, album covers, illustrations, and photographs inspired by music and the performing arts will provide a visual and aural score to Warhol’s extraordinary work and life.
