Happy Catchy Halloween Music: Blur

October 31, 2008

One of my all time favorite videos. Ever. In 1962 Anthony Burgess wrote the excitingly dystopian book A Clockwork Orange. In 1971 director Stanley Kubrick made the book into a beautifully dystopian movie. In 1995 Blur, popular Brit band, created this video for their anthemically dystopian single ‘The Universal’ with help from director Jonathan Glazer. And gawd damn if I don’t love all three. In my opinion, perfect for a possibly dystopian Halloween 2008:

“This is the next century
Where the universal’s free
You can find it anywhere
Yes, the future’s been sold
Every night we’re gone
And to karaoke songs
How we like to sing along
‘though the words are wrong…

The highly stylized sets and costumes! The all white stark modernism! … The eyeliner! The creepy smile with creepy British teeth! The red man, and blue martinis… the bursts of orange… I could go on for days, if you couldn’t tell. And, I love this song.

I hope everyone has an amazing (and dry) All Hallow’s Eve tonight, and if you’re still in a quandary for a halloween costume- have faith in the sexy creepiness of an all white suit and eyeliner.
