Fail-Safe Breakfast

January 23, 2008

Despite the flack that comes with being partly owned by Mike Dirnt, of Green Day, Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe seems to have been able to stand on its own. Nestled between the warehouses and office buildings on Hollis Street, and staring the Emeryville City Hall straight in the face, Rudy’s confidently celebrates it’s origins: intstead of replacing the 60’s era diner with a new structure, it has merely revamped it, and it seems the only way to go for it’s somewhat gritty punk rock vibe. The article found
here can explain its back-story much better than I, so instead we’ll focus on description and analysis. The inside walls are concrete masonry blocks painted a glossy white, with a concrete floor and stainless steel, large industrial pendant lights. The accent colors of the counter and booths are a primary blue and bright orange. Normally I would cringe, but it all looks awesome! The place would not be complete, however, without the screenprint-esque artwork on the walls, hodge-podge tables complete with inlaid conversation-starters galore, and of course the back-lit translucent blue installation box lined with Barbies outfitted in- what else?- 50s era Rudy’s Waitress uniforms.

here’s the table we got last time! Anyone remember ‘Operation’?

Browsing the Yelp comments, there seemed to be a consistent string of complaints about the wait and substandard service. I will admit that these are true factors to the dining experience there, but as I see it- just part of the Rudy’s ambience. Perhaps I am more easily occupied, but the wait doesn’t bother me- I just a grab a cup o’ joe (conveniently on hand) and stand back and enjoy some great people watching. Quite a mixed crowd- watching the pierced and/or tattooed (but always indifferent- that’s a must) waiters serve middle-aged Cal fans never ceases to amuse me. With all this and walls covered in funny pictures of friends and family, there is no lack of visually interesting things to busy myself with. In fact, Matt and I probably look like we don’t know each other, either that or we’re the boring people- because we hardly say a word and barely look at each other as we intently survey our surroundings.

As far as I’m concerned, the food is worth the wait. The only thing I love more than breakfast is DINER BREAKFAST. Especially when it’s at 2pm on a Saturday and you’re hung-over as all hell. Coffee, eggs, toast, bacon, hash browns- layer it on baby… ’tis my guiltiest pleasure. The hair of the dog is available as well, of course, in the form of Bloody Marys, Mimosas, etc. What I’m proposing, people, is a late-night sesh’ at Rudy’s. I’ve only ever been there in the day, but have always wanted to enjoy:
a) CHEAP drinks, $1 beers after 9pm every day, along with daily drink specials
b) good drunk-munchy food
c) good music!
d) chill crowd, and

e) the hard-to-find place to sit, available until 1am.

So who’s with me? As the Clash name implies, Rudy’s can’t really fail….

Definitely worth waiting until 9 for dinner, eh? I was definitely a fan of the half Sonoma Chicken salad, and am intrigued to try the Buffalo Tofu! You should post that pic of the lovely Olympia beer cans, glowing with the orange table top. awesome.
